Robert PEMBER d.1560

Biographical Note

Of Herefordshire. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1523, fellow there from 1524, MA 1527; fellow of King's Hall 1542, and in 1546 one of the founding fellows of Trinity College. He was noted as a humanist scholar, proficient in Greek and Hebrew, and he taught Greek to Roger Ascham; he also wrote some Latin poetry.

Books

Pember's probate inventory includes ca.180 books, valued at £8 16s 1d (from a total estate valued at just under £20). The books are mostly in Latin, with some Greek and Hebrew, with a mixture of theology, philosophy, classics, medicine and other topics. He bequeathed a number of specific books to academic colleagues, including Greek books to Ascham. The full inventory is edited as Leedham-Green no.111 (see full citation below).
