Christopher BROWN d.1559

Biographical Note

Of Horbling, Lincolnshire. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1536, fellow there from 1536, MA 1539, BD 1549. He was vicar of Horbling and a prebendary of Chichester from 1555.

Books

Brown's probate inventory includes ca.200 books, valued at £17 5s 6d (from a total estate valued at just over £70). The books are mostly in Latin, with some Greek, English and Hebrew, with a predominance of theology alongside some philosophy, classics, medicine, mathematics and other topics. He bequeathed many specific books to his pupils, academic colleagues, and "poore scholers in S. Johns colledge". The full inventory is edited as Leedham-Green no.101 (see full citation below).
