Born in Lancashire. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1553, fellow there from 1553, MA 1557.
Books
Hartley's probate inventory includes ca.50 books, valued at £2 1s 6d (from a total estate valued at £8 1s). The books are mostly in Latin, with a mixture of theology, pilosophy, classics and other topics relevant to university teaching. His goods were inherited by his brother Christopher, to be received when he completed his apprenticeship. The full inventory is edited as Leedham-Green no.75 (see full citation below).
