John MADEW d.1556
Biographical Note
Born in Lancashire. BA St John's College, Cambridge and fellow there 1530, MA 1533, proctor 1534. He was made regius professor of divinity in 1545 and master of Clare College in 1549, and was Vice-Chancellor several times between 1545 and 1550. Vicar of St Ives 1546; he was removed from his preferments after the accession of Mary in 1553, and died in reduced circumstances.
Books
Madew's probate inventory includes ca.35 books, valued at £1 10s 8d (from a total estate valued at £19 7s 3d). The books are mostly in Latin, with a predominance of theology, with some classics and a copy of the Koran. The full inventory is edited as Leedham-Green no.72 (see full citation below).
