George FOLBURY or FOWLBERRY d.1540

Biographical Note

Possibly a younger son of Richard Fowberry, of Fowberry, Northumberland. BA Pembroke College, Cambridge 1514, MA 1517, later fellow there. He may have taken a DD degree from the University of Montpellier. He was possibly a tutor to Henry Fitzroy, Henry VIII's illegitimate son; he became a canon of North Newbold, Yorkshire in 1531, held other ecclesiastical livings, and was made Master of Pembroke College in 1537. He is reputed to have been a poet, but no works of his survive.

Books

Folbury's probate inventory includes 23 titles, in 27 volumes, valued at £1 7s (from a total estate valued at ca.£52). The books are almost entirely Latin, with a predominance of theology, including some works by Luther and a German (or Dutch) testament. The full inventory is edited as Leedham-Green no.7 (see full citation below).
