Armorial stamp of Sir William Hayward (British Armorial Bindings)

Biographical Note

Son of John Hayward, of Tandridge Hall, Surrey. Admitted at the Inner Temple 1635, knighted 1641. He was a courtier for a while in the 1640s; after the Restoration, he was MP for Bletchingley in 1661, and held various administrative offices. He was a candidate for the position of Garter King of Arms in 1677, but Sir William Dugdale was appointed.

Books

A number of mostly 17th century books survive bearing an armorial stamp of the Hayward family, which seem most probably to be associated with Sir William (they have also been attributed to his father John, ca.1571-1631, whose dates look too early). Examples: Cambridge UL T.3.36; Magdalen College, Oxford n.5.21;Christopher Edwards cat 77 (2020)/87.
