Timothy HALTON 1632?-1704

Biographical Note

Son of Miles Halton of Greenthwaite Hall, Cumberland. BA Queen's College, Oxford 1653, MA 1655, fellow 1657, BD 1662. Prebendary of St David's 1662, archdeacon of Brecon 1672, of Oxford 1675. Provost of Queen's College 1677, vice-chancellor of the University 1679-81, and again 1685-6. He was closely associated, throughout his career, with Thomas Lamplugh and Sir Joseph Williamson.

Books

Halton part-funded, and oversaw, the building of a new library for Queen’s in the 1690s; he bequeathed 300 books in folio, and 200 in quarto or smaller sizes, to the college. The remainder of has library was auctioned in Oxford, 13.2.1706; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Post Boy.
