Sir William GORDON, 1st bart d.1742
Biographical Note
Son of Sir Adam Gordon of Dalpholly, Sutherland, from whom he inherited the family estates in 1700; soon afterwards he bought an estate at Inverbreakie, which he renamed Invergordon, and which became his designation when created a baronet in 1704. MP for Sutherland 1708-27, and later for Cromartyshire. He engaged in business as a banker and died in Chelsea.
Books
Gordon used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 12302); the extent and disposition of his library are not known.
