John VANS AGNEW of Barnbarroch, Laird of Sheuchan, 1724-1780

Biographical Note

Born John Vans in 1724, he added the surname Agnew on his marriage in 1748 to his cousin Margaret Agnew, daughter of Robert Agnew, 3rd of Sheuchan. He was the son of Patrick Vans of Barquhanny and Barnbarroch (ca. 1694-1733) and Barbara McDowall, daughter of Patrick McDowall of Freugh.The family seat was at Barnbarroch in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland where he built a new mansion in 1771.

Used an engraved bookplate (Franks 219): Agnew, Vans, of Shewchane.

The extent and disposition of his library is not known.
