George TOWNSEND or TOWNESEND d.1726
Books
The library of "George Townesend Esq; Commissioner of Excise" was auctioned in London, beginning 25 January 1727; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Post. His career has not been traced, but he is assumed to be the Townsend whose will was proved in October 1726, where he is described as "of Lincolns Inn". The will has no mention of books, but there is a reference to selling his goods, as well as land and houses, to pay debts and provide for bequests. He is included in the list of subscribers to Charles King's The British merchant in 1721 (ESTC t99984).
