William DICKINSON 1670/1-1724
Biographical Note
Son of William Dickinson, controller clerk at Windsor Castle, and chief clerk of the King's Works. He followed in his father's professions and between 1696 and 1711 was employed by Sir Christopher Wren on the rebuilding of St Paul's Cathedral, and other City churches destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. He succeeded his father in the post at Windsor, and was also deputy surveyor of the fabric at Westminster Abbey. Many of his drawings survive in the Abbey archives.
Books
Dickinson's library was auctioned in London, beginning 27 April 1725; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertsied in the Daily Post as comprising his "prints, drawings, books of architecture etc".
