Simon LOWTH or LOUTH 1636-1720
Biographical Note
Born at Dingley, Northamptonshire, son of Simon Lowth, rector there. BA Clare College, Cambridge 1657, MA 1660, BD and DD 1689. He was vicar of St Dunstan's, Canterbury from 1665, and held other livings in Kent; he was made Dean of Rochester in 1688, but deprived shortly afterwards of all his preferments for refusing the oath of allegiance to William III. He published several doctrinal works in the 1680s and continued to write and publish on matters of ecclesiastical history and policy, from his nonjuring perspective.
Books
Lowth's brief will left most of his estate to his wife, including "household stuffe, books papers manuscripts and personall estate of what kind soever". His library was auctioned in London, beginning 23 February 1721; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in several newspapers.
