Samuel MOUNTFORT d.1719

Biographical Note

Mountfort's education and early career have not been traced; records (and his will) suggest that he was ordained. In 1682 he became upper grammar master at Christ's Hospital (the London school), where he remained for the rest of his life.

Books

In his will, Mountfort bequeathed to the school library of Christ's Hospital "my pair of globes with the boxes thereunto belonging, as also four large volumes of the English Atlas very fairly bound". Most of the rest of his estate was divided between his sons John and Menheire. His library was auctioned in London, beginning 3 December 1719; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in several newspapers, as "a curious collection of books in divinity, history, travels &c in Greek, Latin and English".
