John MAUD d.1731

Biographical Note

Notices in the London press of his death in March 1731 describe him as a ‘an eminent Chymist’, with premises in Aldersgate Street, London. He was presumably the John Maud, styled ‘Citizen and Weaver of London’ in a will dated 1723, proved in April 1731, showing connections with the Aldersgate area. The business of drug and chemical manufacturing at these premises was continued by at least two later generations of Mauds.

Books

He had an engraved armorial bookplate (‘Johan. Maud. Philochim. ad insig. Clav. Aurat vulgo vocato Aldersgate Street, Lond.’): Franks 20018.

There is no mention of books in his will, and the content and disposition of his library are not established.
