John LETHIEULLIER d.1737

Biographical Note

Son of Sir John Lethieullier, a wealthy merchant and sheriff of London, a member of a family which had fled from France to England during religious persecution in the 16th century. Initially trained to follow in the family mercantile business, he became a member of the Barber Surgeons Company in 1680. In 1694, around the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Smart, he purchased the manor of Aldersbrook, Essex; he expanded the estate after his father's death, when he inherited further wealth. He was Remembrancer of the City of London Corporation 1726-37.

Books

Lethieullier used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 18188/9). The extent of his library is not known; the Aldersbrook estate, and its contents, was inherited by his eldest son Smart, who further developed it and became a noted collector of antiquities. He too used a bookplate (Franks 18190/1) and his library was auctioned in London, 23.2.1761.
