Anthony SCATTERGOOD 1611-87

Biographical Note

Son of John Scattergood of Chaddesdon, Derbyshire, occupation::attorney]]. BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1633, MA 1636, chaplain 1637-40, tutor 1640, DD 1662. Rector of Winwick, Northamptonshire and prebendary of Lincoln 1641, and Lichfield 1666. He published sermons and doctrinal works, and was involved in biblical editing, and in producing the 9-volume Critici sacri (1660), published to accompany Walton's Polyglot Bible.

Books

Scattergood acted as librarian to John Williams while he was Bishop of Lincoln. He bequeathed his library to his son Samuel (1646-96), who took over his father's prebends at Lichfield and Lincoln, and added to it. After his death, the library was auctioned in London, 26.7.1697. The catalogue (the British Library copy may be slightly imperfect?) contains 1864 lots, divided between Latin theology (331 lots), Latin miscellaneous (1227), English divinity (89), English miscellaneous (153), Italian books (37), Spanish books (6), and French books (21).
