John BRUDENELL 1584-1647

The armorial stamp of John Brudenell (British Armorial Bindings)

Biographical Note

Younger son of Robert Brudenell, of Diddington, Huntingdonshire, a member of a recusant gentry family. Matriculated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge 1593, but did not graduate; his elder brother Thomas assigned estates at Oakley and Potton, Bedfordshire to him when he inherited location;;Deene Park from his uncle. A royalist supporter in the Civil war, he was imprisoned in Newgate in 1643 and died there.

Books

A number of John's books survive in the Tresham/Brudenell family library at Deene Park, as described in the Barker/Quentin account (see below). Some of these date from his time in Cambridge, while others were bought in France during travels there ca.1612.

Characteristic Markings

Some of Brudenell's books are marked with an armorial stamp, very similar to one used by Thomas but distinguished by the heraldic cadency mark of a crescent for difference.
