John VERNEY ca.1652-1707

John Verney's bookplate (British Museum Franks Collection *235)

Biographical Note

Son of Sir Richard Verney, from 1696 11th Baron Willoughby de Broke (d.1711). Matriculated at Jesus College, Cambridge 1668, but did not graduate; admitted at the Middle Temple 1670 (barrister, 1677). He inherited extensive estates in Warwickshire, and had the estate of Allexton, Leicestershire settled upon him when he married in 1683. MP for Leicestershire, 1685-1707, where he was active in parliamentary affairs.

Books

Verney used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 30327/*235); the extent and disposition of his library is not known.
