George CRAUFURD or CRAUFORD d.1748
Biographical Note
George Craufurd was the third son of Thomas Craufurd of Cartsburn, Renfrewshire, by his wife Jean Semple. He graduated M.A. from the University of Glasgow in either 1695 or 1697 (there are graduates of his name in both years). He was an important figure in the antiquarian circles of early-eighteenth century Scotland, publishing a Genealogical History . . . of the Stuarts together with a history his native Renfrewshire (1710), The Peerage of Scotland (1716), and Lives and Characters of the Officers of the Crown (1726). He married Margaret Anderson, daughter of the antiquary James Anderson, and died 24 December 1748 in Glasgow. There are substantial deposits of his manuscripts collections in the National Library of Scotland and elsewhere.

The extent and disposition of his library is unknown.
Characteristic Markings
He used an early armorial bookplate signed by the Edinburgh engraved Archibald Burden, with the motto “quod tibi hoc alteri” and the inscription “Mr George Craufurd His Book”. The example in the NLS Henderson Smith Collection, J.H.S.1(89.4), scores out ‘Mr George’ and replaces it with “Tho:”.
