Biographical Note
Born at Chipping Ongar, Essex, son of Sir John Bull and Elizabeth Turner. He was educated at Westminster and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Bull was a Member of Parliament in the constituency of Newport, Cornwall, from June 26, 1756–1780.
Books
Bull extra-illustrated (grangerized) almost seventy items in his collection. His library included approximately five hundred illustrated volumes, including books bequeathed to him by Horace Walpole and Anthony Morris Storer. Correspondence exists between Bull and Walpole. Parts of his collection were sold at auction by Leigh and Sotheby on 8 March 1810; and later at Sotheby's on 23 May 1881; and with parts included in the sale of A.C. Swinburne (a descendant of Bull's wife by her first marriage) at Sotheby's, 1889.
Characteristic Markings
Bull used a Chippendale bookplate in his books, of which three variations exist (Franks 4282-4284).
