Legh MASTER ca.1694-1750

Biographical Note

Son of Sir Streynsham Master, governor of Madras and a leading figure in the establishment of early British government in India. He inherited Codnor Castle and other estates in Derbyshire from his father in 1724. Matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge 1711, but did not graduate. MP for Newton 1727-47; he was also mayor of Wigan in 1726.

Books

Master used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 19954), made sometime after his marriage in 1739 to his second wife, Anne Smith. The extent and disposition of his library is not known; his will has no specific mention of books, and the bulk of his estates and property were inherited by his eldest son Legh.
