John HYLTON 1699-1746
Biographical Note
Second son of John Hylton of Hylton Castle, County Durham, whose family had been settled there since before the Norman Conquest and who held a feudal baronial title as Baron Hylton. This John succeeded his elder brother in the family estates in 1722, and added a south wing to the Castle. He was MP for Carlisle 1727-46.
Books
Hylton used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 15900). The extent of his library is not known; he had no children, and after his death the estate was inherited by his nephew Sir Richard Musgrave, 5th bart, who took the name of Hylton.
