John HAMILTON, 3rd Lord Belhaven and Stenton, 1680-1721

Biographical Note

Son of Robert Hamilton, 2nd Lord Belhaven and Stenton (1656–1708). He was chosen one of the sixteen representatives ot the Scottish peerage, at the general election in 1715; appointed one of the gentlemen of the bed-chamber to George, Prince of Wales, and commanded the East Lothian troop of horse at the battle of Sheriffmuir 13th November 1715. He was travelling to take up appointment as governor of Barbados in 1721 but was shipwrecked and drowned on the Stag Rocks, near the Lizard Point.
