Sir John HARRISON ca.1589-1669

Biographical Note

Son of William Harrison of Aldcliffe, Lancashire. Possibly matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford 1603, without graduating. He was clerk to Sir John Wolstenholme ca.1611-38, and was involved in managing and collecting customs dues. He was MP for Scarborough and Lancaster between 1628 and 1669, and bought an estate at Balls Park, Hertfordshire.

Books

125 books, valued at £34 13s 10d, were seized from his home by the London Committee for Sequestration in 1643, and sold. An inventory survives in the Committee's records in The National Archives. In his will, Harrison bequeathed £10 to Warton school in Lancashire, for the purchase of books; otherwise, his will has no mention of books.
