Cuthbert ELLISON 1676-1719

Biographical Note

Born in Jarrow, Durham, son of Cuthbert Ellison, Merchant Adventurer. Matriculated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford 1694, BA 1698, MA, fellow 1701/2, BD 1710, ordained at St Mary Magdalene, Oxford, in 1703. Apparently spent much of his life at Corpus Christi College and was buried in the college chapel when he died in 1719.

Books

In his will, Ellison bequeathed to Corpus Christi College all his books "which they have not already or if any of mine is of a better edition than theirs", the remainder to go to William Ellison, his brother and executor. There are over 300 volumes at Corpus Christi College, but it is unknown how much of his library the college decided to keep.

Characteristic Markings

Ellison regularly inscribed his books and most have an institutional bookplate detailing the bequest to the college. He also frequently wrote the price he paid for his books on the endpapers. They are mainly theological in nature, with some volumes on geography and medicine. Examples: many in Corpus Christi College, Oxford.
