Biographical Note

Born at Peterborough, son of Richard Cumberland, Bishop of Peterborough. BA Magdalene College, Cambridge 1698, MA 1701. Rector of Peakirk, Northamptonshire 1703, of Elton, Huntingdonshire 1723; prebendary of Peterborough 1699, of Lincoln 1727; archdeacon of Northampton 1707.

Books

Cumberland used two engraved armorial bookplates, of different design (Franks 7548-9); the extent and disposition of his library is not known. A list of five books given to Magdalene College Cambridge is recorded in the College's seventeenth-century donors' register, MS. F.4.33, though not all items recorded are extant within the collection.
