Francis POWELL 1682-1749

Biographical Note

Born at Colchester, Essex, son of Joseph Powell, clergyman. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1702, MA 1705. Vicar of Rendham, Suffolk 1711, of Colchester 1713-49.

Books

Powell used an engraved armorial bookplate, dated 1736 (Franks 23938). The extent of his library is not known; most of his books were presumably inherited by his son, William Samuel Powell (1717-75), later Master of St John's at Cambridge, who bequeathed his books among four college fellows when he died unmarried.
