William NISBET or NESBIT ca.1666-1724

Biographical Note

Son of Alexander Nisbet of Craigentinny, near Edinburgh. He probably graduated MA from Edinburgh University in 1683. In 1686 he inherited the estate of Dirleton, near Haddington, from his relative Sir John Nisbet; this, combined with wealth accrued from marriage settlements, significantly enhanced his fortune. He was an MP in the Scottish Parliament 1703-07, and MP for Scotland 1707-08; he was involved in negotiations over the Act of Union.

Books

Nisbet used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 21907). The extent and disposition of his library are not known; his estate was subject to legal dispute by members of his family from different marriages, after his death.
