James MAXWELL of Carnsalloch d.1750
Biographical Note
Second son of George Maxwell, 9th of Carnsalloch, Dumfriesshire, a member of a very long-established family there. He inherited the estates from his father in 1727, but only for his lifetime (George, being disappointed with his sons, left the formal inheritance to a son of one of his daughters, James, later an officer in the Jacobite army in 1745). This James died unmarried in 1750.
Books
Maxwell used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 20093); the extent and disposition of his library is not known.
