Peter FOULKES 1676?-1747

Biographical Note

Son of Robert Foulkes of Llechryd, Denbighshire, deputy baron of the court of exchequer at Chester. BA Christ Church, Oxford 1698, MA 1701, junior proctor 1705, BD and DD 1710. In 1707 he inherited significant estates in Cornwall from his cousin William Jane. Canon of Exeter Cathedral 1704, of Christ Church, Oxford 1724; he also held various ecclesiastical livings in Devon. He published various Latin poems, sermons, and a translation of Aeschines against Ctesiphon (1696).

Books

Foulkes used an engraved armorial bookplate dated 1724 (Franks 11098). The extent of his library is not known; in his will, he directed that his books be divided between his three sons, John, Peter and William (while his plate was to be divided between both the sons and daughters). William went on to use an altered version of the bookplate, with his own name and the date 1754 (Franks 11099).
