Biographical Note
Of Borden, Kent, son of Robert Plot (d.1669). Entered Magdalen Hall, Oxford 1658; BA 1661; MA 1664. Proceeded BCL and DCL in 1671. Served as dean and vice-principal of Magdalen Hall before moving to University College in 1676. Appointed the first professor of chemistry at Oxford and the first keeper of the Ashmolean Museum followin Elias Ashmole's bequest. A naturalist, Plot authored The Natural History of Oxfordshire (1676) and was elected to the Royal Society in 1677. He served as its second secretary 1682-1684 and edited the Philosophical Transactions.
