John GIDLEY d.1711

Biographical Note

Son of George Gidley, of Exeter, gentleman. BA Exeter College, Oxford 1657, MA 1660. Became a Nonconformist minister in Exeter, ordained in 1660, licensed to preach there 1672. Minister at Aldborough Hatch, Essex 1690; when he died, he was living at Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

Books

In his will, Gidley directed that three of his associates should help his executor in selling his books. To the parish of St Thomas, Exeter, he bequeathed £20, half to be spent in providing "the most religious persons" with fair Bibles, without the Apocrypha or Common Prayer; the other half was to be spent on giving them copies of Richard Baxter's Call to the unconverted, Joseph Alleine's Sure guide to heaven, and William Burkitt's Poor man's help.
