Leonard HOTCHKIS 1691-1771
Biographical Note
Son of Richard Hotchkis of Chirbury, Shropshire. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1712, MA 1716. curate of Upton Magna from 1718; perpetual curate of Uffington from 1734; schoolmaster of Shrewsbury School 1735-1754; perpetual curate of Battlefield from 1749; and rector of Ryton from 1762.

Hotchkis was involved with the library of Shrewsbury School, making donations and creating a catalogue of its holdings, but he bequeathed his own "books and papers" to his brother, Richard. Examples: Many of his manuscripts and correspondence survive in the Shropshire Archives and the British Library. Printed books from his library have been identified in the Gunnerusbiblioteket, Universidad de Salamanca (BG/11806), and University of Glasgow (Sp Coll Hunterian Bf.3.10).
Characteristic Markings
Hotchkis used a Chippendale armorial bookplate (Franks 15434), and there are also examples of his name being inscribed in his books.
