Biographical Note

Eldest son of William Duff, a wealthy merchant and tax official of Inverness who sat as a member of the Scottish Parliament. Alexander Duff was educated at King's College, Aberdeen University and followed in his father's businesses. Like his father, he supported the accession of William III but he opposed the union of Scotland and England as member of the Scottish Parliament for Inverness (1702–1707). He sat in the British Parliament from 1708 to 1710 and was twice Provost of Inverness in 1706–1709 and 1712–1715.
