Humphrey BROOKE 1668-1718
Biographical Note
Born in London, son of Humphrey Brooke, a physician who was also a leveller during the Civil War period. MB Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge 1689, MD 1694; he then developed a career as a physician in London. He was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1701 (registrar, 1716).
Books
Brooke's library, together with that of Robert Dickins of the Temple, was auctioned in London, beginning 10 February 1720; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in several newspapers. Brooke's will has no mention of books (or a wife or children); most of his property was bequeathed around his siblings and other relatives, though Robert Dickins Dickins, whose books were part of the same sale, was also left £800.
