Biographical Note
Younger son of Nicholas Loftus, 1st Viscount Loftus, an Anglo-Irish politician and landowner. He sat in the Irish House of Commons between 1747 and 1769, and was High Sheriff of Wexford in 1744. In 1769 he succeeded his nephew Nicholas Loftus as Viscount Loftus and in 1771 was made Earl of Ely (in the Irish peerage).
Books
Loftus used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 18616); the extent and disposition of his library are not known (he had no children and his estates passed to a nephew, Charles Loftus, 1st Marquess of Ely).
