William MURRAY, 2nd Lord Nairne, ca.1665-1725
Biographical Note
The fourth son of John Murray, 1st Marquess of Atholl, and younger brother of John Murray, the 1st Duke of Atholl. In 1683 he inherited the title of Lord Nairne from his father-in-law Robert Nairne. He took his seat in the Scottish Parliament in 1690 but did not take the oath to William and Mary. As a result of his Jacobite sympathies, he fought on James Stuart's side in the uprising of 1715. He was captured at the Battle of Preston and sent to the Tower of London. He was tried and sentenced to death but the sentence was not carried out. He was released in 1717.
