Hugh RAYMOND 1674-1737
Biographical Note
Raymond's parentage and early history have not been traced; he became a successful naval captain and shipbuilder, much involved with the affairs of the South Sea Company and trade with India. He was also a colonel in the London militia. He had property in London and in 1717 he bought the estate of Saling Hall, Essex; in 1732 he acquired the manor of Beckenham, Kent.
Books
Raymond used an engraved armorial bookplate, made sometime after his purchase of Saling Hall in 1717 (Franks 24662). The extent of his library is not known; his lengthy will has no specific mention of books, which would have been part of the residue of his personal estate which (together with Saling Hall) passed to his eldest son Jones Raymond.
