Thomas PELHAM ca.1705-1737

Biographical Note

Younger son of Henry Pelham of Stanmer, Sussex, MP; he inherited the family estates from his elder brother Henry in 1725. He was apprenticed to Sir John Lethieullier, Turkey merchant, whose stepdaughter he married, and he spent time in Istanbul. Returning to England after 1725, he was MP for Lewes 1727-37, where he was noted as a drunkard; he "died of drink", according to the History of Parliament.

Books

Pelham used and engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 23144). The extent of his library is not known; it would have been inherited by his son Thomas, along with all his other household goods and effects, although his will has no specific mention of books.
