William DUCIE, 1st Viscount Downe 1615?-79

Biographical Note

Son of Sir Robert Ducie, 1st bart, Lord Mayor of London. He inherited the baonetcy and family estates on the death of his elder brother in 1657, and was created Viscount Downe (in the peerage of Ireland) in 1675 (the peerage becoming extinct on his death). His primary seat was at Tortworth, Gloucestershire.

Books

Ducie's library was auctioned in London in 1680. The sale catalogue contains 1720 lots, divided only by language, not subject: Latin and Greek books (868 lots), English (219), French (360), Italian (215) and Spanish (58).
