Ralph ASSHETON 1720/1-1758

Assheton's bookplate, from an example in Shrewsbury School Library

Biographical Note

Son of Ralph Assheton of Walton, Lancashire; later himself of Downham and Cuerdale. Matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford 1738, but did not graduate. He married Mary, daughter of Thomas Lister of Gisburne Park.

Books

Assheton used an anonymous engraved armorial bookplate, impaling the arms of Assheton and Lister (Franks 848). The extent and disposition of his library are not known, but a number of books with this plate survive today in Shrewsbury School Library.
