John BALNEAVES of Carnbaddie, fl.1700-1750
Biographical Note
The Red Book of Scotland records several entries for a John Balneaves of Carnbady or Carnbaddie.
- John Balneaves of Carnbaddie and Friarton (ca. 1645 - ca. 1713), son of Alexander Balneaves M.A., Dean of Dunkeld, and Margaret Hamilton (d. 1663). He was educated at St Andrews University (M.A. 1667) and was the minister at Dunbarney from 1681 to 1689.
- John Balneaves of Friarton and Carnbaddie (ca. 1690 - ca. 1730), son of James Balneaves of Glencarse and Carnbaddie (d. ca. 1712). He was succeeded by three further generations all called John Balneaves of Carnbaddie.
There is an entry for the name in the 1740 Edinburgh edition of John Major's Historia ... Britanniae, which suggests that the book plate might be that of one of the later Johns.
Books
Used an engraved bookplate (Franks 1344): Balneaves, John, of Carnbady, Esqr.
