Sir John AUBREY, 3rd bart 1680-1743

One of Aubrey's bookplates, British Museum Franks Collection 957

Biographical Note

Born 20 June 1680, oldest son of John Aubrey ca.1650-1700, 2nd Bart, by his 1st wife. Educated at Jesus College, Oxford, 1698. Married (1) 20 June 1701, to Mary Stealy (d. 1714); (2) c.1716, to Frances Jephson, daughter of William Jephson of Boarstall; (3) 1 Feb. 1725, to Jane Thomas (d. bef. 1741) of Boarstall. Succeeded as 3rd Bart, 15 Sept. 1700.

Books

Used an engraved bookplate:

Franks 957: Aubrey, Sr. John, of Lantrithyd in the County of Glamorgan, Baronet, and of Boarestall in the County of Bucks. (Franks 955, created for his father, with the engraved plate altered.) 1717.

Probably also used his father's bookplate, altered, but with the date of 1698 unchanged:

Franks 956: Aubrey, Sr. John, of Lantrithyd in the County of Glamorgan, Baronet, and of Boarestall in the County of Bucks. (Franks 955, with the escutcheon of pretence erased.) 1698.
