Anne CECIL or CAVENDISH ca.1649-1704

Bookplate of Anne, Countess of Exeter (British Museum Franks Collection *29)

Biographical Note

Daughter of William Cavendish, 3rd Earl of Devonshire. In 1662 she married Charles Rich, son of Charles Rich, 4th Earl of Warwick; after his death in 1664 she married, secondly, John Cecil, later 5th Earl of Exeter. She travelled with him in Europe in 1679-81 and 1699-1700.

Like other members of the Cecil family at the time (including her husband and son), Anne Cecil had a large engraved armorial bookplate made (Franks *29). The extent and disposition of her library are not known.
