Sir Peter LEGH or LEIGH or LEGHE 1588-1636

Biographical Note

Son of Sir Peter Legh, of Lyme Park, Cheshire, a long-established gentry family there (who were often called Peter, generation after generation). Matriculated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge 1580, but did not graduate; possibly entered Gray's Inn 1585. He held various local offices in Cheshire and was MP for Wigan/Cheshire between 1586 and 1601.

Books

Fragments of the early Legh library, of unknown original size, remain today at Lyme Park; correspondence of the late 16th and early 17th century refers to the obtaining of books, both by this Peter and by his son Francis Legh (1590-1643). Legh was noted for his interests in music, and heraldry.
