James BRYDGES, 8th Baron Chandos 1642-1714

Bookplate of James Brydges, Baron Chandos (BM Franks Collection *75)

Biographical Note

Son of Sir John Brydges, 2nd baronet, of Wilton, Herefordshire. Matriculated at St John's College, Oxford 1657, but did not graduate. He inherited his father's title as 3rd baronet in 1652, and in 1676 became 8th Baron Chandos on the death of his relative William, 7th Baron. High Sheriff of Herefordshire 1667; ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople 1681-87.

Books

Brydges used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks *75), but we do not know the extent of his library. His will has no mention of books, leaving the bulk of his estate to his eldest son James, and any residue of his goods and chattels to his wife.
