Mary RUTHVEN 1789-1885

Biographical Note

Lady Mary Hamilton (Campbell) Ruthven was born in 1789. She married James, 7th Lord Ruthven of Freeland, in 1813. She was widowed in 1853 and passed away in 1885.

Books

Lady Ruthven's library was sold at auction by Mr. Dowell of Edinburgh in 1885. The auction consisted of 631 lots (351 octavos, 143 quarto, 69 folios, and 68 miscellaneous volumes) comprised of mostly 18th- and 19th-century books, although some 16th- and 17th-century books can be found. Subjects include maps, art, history, theology, pamphlets, music, and classics, with books printed for the Maitland and Bannatyne clubs.
