Alexander INGLIS d.1719

Biographical Note

Little biographical information about Inglis seems to exist, but he was apparently a merchant in Edinburgh before purchasing the Inglis family seat at Murdostoun from a distant cousin. Upon his death he bequeathed his estate to his nephew Alexander Hamilton, on the condition that he took the Inglis name.

Inglis' library was sold at auction in Edinburgh on 1 July 1719 by James McEuen. The catalogue describes the books as being 'in several faculties and languages'. The library was sold in 575 lots consisting of 250 octavos, 121 quartos, and 204 folios.

Example: University of Edinburgh Library Ms.Add.3

Characteristic Markings
