George SETON 4th Earl of Winton, ca.1641-1704

Biographical Note

The son of George Seton, Master of Winton (1613-1648), who was the eldest surviving son of the 3rd Earl of Winton. He was studying in Europe when he succeeded his grandfather in 1650. He served with success in the French army in 1660 and on his return to Scotland was appointed to the Scottish Privy Council and given command of the East Lothian Regiment of Foot. He was reported to have an interest in mathematics and physical science. He had a new harbor built at Cockenzie, called Port Seton.

Possibly George Seton, 4th Earl of Winton, whose ancestor the 4th Lord Seton had married Elizabeth Hay, daughter of Lord Hay of Yester. His wife, the Countess of Winton also had a bookplate.

The extent and disposition of his library is not known.
