Washington SHIRLEY, 2nd Earl Ferrers 1677-1729
Biographical Note
Son of Robert Shirley, 1st Earl Ferrers, of Staunton Harold, Leicestershire, from whom he inherited the title and family estates in 1717. Matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford 1693, but did not graduate. He had a commission in the Coldstream Guards around the turn of the 18th century, and was an Irish MP 1713-15.
Books
Shirley used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 26787-8); the extent and disposition of his library is not known. He had 3 daughters, but no sons, and the earldom passed to his brother Henry, who was confined as a lunatic for part of his life.
